“The British are good at preserving and representing the past, we are perhaps less good at thinking about the shape of the future.”
Rob Young, author of Electric Eden: Unearthing Britain's Visionary Music (Faber & Faber, 2011).
Jeremy Deller and Rob Young were in conversation at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo to open the third of the Silver Series - single artist retrospective screenings which deep dive into an artist’s film work, both old and new. Deller’s films have not been shown on this scale in Norway before. His work brilliantly addresses and challenges issues around national identity, the balance of power, cultures and subcultures, whilst retaining a sense of solidarity at its heart. At a time when questions remain about Britain’s decision to leave the European Union, Deller’s work feels particularly poignant; over time, he has grown to become one of the most interesting cultural thinkers working in the UK today. The conversation took place in Kunstnernes Hus cinema to a packed audience on Friday 18th January 2019.
